The Role of Entrepreneurship in Ending Poverty and Homelessness

Social entrepreneurship has proven to provide impactful innovations for poverty alleviation,” says Abby Maxman, President of OxFam America. Maxman was among a diverse group of people working on poverty eradication who contributed to a recent roundtable discussion on ending extreme poverty. The idea of ending poverty and homelessness seemed absurd a generation ago. Today, the idea has been enshrined officially in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as something the world should achieve by 2030. The interrogation now remains: how can entrepreneurship be explored as a model for ending poverty? We can find the answer to this question by drawing on Orpe Human Rights Advocates Entrepreneurship Wraparound Model developed by Dr. Edward-T Moises.

Orpe Human Rights Advocates Entrepreneurship wraparound model  is based on the following pillars:

  • Entrepreneurship capacity building

  • Equipping change-makers with transformational leadership skills

  • Stimulating and supporting entrepreneurship initiatives

  • Know-how, and technology

  • Coordinated supportive social services
